Has anyone found/used/heard-of a Route Finder/Generator that can be used with OS OpenSpace maps.

That is to say that one that will provide a set of points that allow a Route Line to be drawn

AS WELL AS

providing a number of Route Points.

I have recently been, and still am playing with a product from http://www.postcodeanywhere.co.uk/ which is good and interesting

EXCEPT THAT

it does NOT provide line data

I use Google to get routes into OziExplorer, but it's a manual process: plan the route in Google, download it as kml with the link (adding &output=kml) then convert to required format with gpsbabel.

I don't know if this can be fully automated, or if gpsbabel can write something OS can understand, but it can't be rocket science to program the conversion.

Hi Pete,

We have recently added a tutorial to the Wiki to help use Postcode Anywhere data with OS OpenSpace here: http://osopenspacewiki.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Tutorial_Fourteen

Hopefully this will help apart from obviously not providing the line data.

Many thanks

On reflection, I don't know if you need gps babel. Take a look at http://www.pkhbc.x10.mx/sandbox/router.htm
where I have lashed up a plotter for Google kml. You can get the kml with maps.google.com?hl=en&saddr=AA99+A99&daddr=BB88+B88&ouput=kml. where the AAs and BBs are postcodes.

I don't know how to get the webpage to get this file by itself, so I've added an uploader as a quick fix. It gives its output in a new page, so click the back button after uploading.

Quick and dirty, but it may point the way (excuse the pun).

Thanks Graham.

Thanks to your pointers I have increased my knowledge of Google Maps. I now know how to fairly easily get KML files from Google.

It seems to me that google is OK at generating routes and displaying them on maps. Once I have used them to do that I would not need or desire to see that route on a different type of map.

But I am very impressed that you have succeeded in doing that.

Around two or three times a week I use Google Route finding facilities - but - once produced, they are ephemeral - so there is no benefit for me to transfer it to OpenSpace maps.

For reasons that I cannot really explain (except maybe patriotism) when I need maps or mapping services for the UK Ordnance Survey is the place that I like to go !!

For the rest of the world Google is great !!

My aim is to use an OpenSpace Map to select two points - that I can and do do !!

Next is to generate a route between those two points - that I can and do do !!

My desire is to draw a line representing that route on THAT SAME OpenSpace Map - drawing lines on OpenSpace maps, I can do, have done and do do !!

Getting the Point Data for the generated route is the bit that I need to do - at the moment, I can't - but I will !!

My real query is "has anyone done this already" - I am not a believer in re-inventing wheels

So you have a route already, but in what format?

If you go on my site at

http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

and select either the Google Map or OSM Cycle map on the right hand map you can click points (press the route button at bottom left first) and get routed between your clicks.

The Google router is used for the Google map and the OSM cycle router for the cycle map.

You should probably check the Google maps API TOU about using their routing without their mapping.

After creating a route you can print it (on an OS map) or save it as GPX.

I'm afraid you will find the source code has a bit of 'late night hack' style about it but you are welcome to copy what you can.

Ah that's your site! Nice work.

Not sure what you mean by get routed. Does it know where the roads/paths are? All I get is straight lines.

Point taken about TOU. If not allowed, I guess one should not grab a route for public display, but why do they allow kml export if it's not to use with other programs/gps?

You must use the Google map or Openstreetmap on the right and click on that map to get routing. You should be able to click road junction way apart and get route legs between them. You can not get hold of the the nice curvy route overlay like you get on google maps to reproject for OS.

You can also go to http://www.carfreewalks.org/, use the editor there and download the walk as GPX-file. Good thing: there's a quarterly prizedraw where you can win outdoor stuff (boots this quarter).

If it sounds as if I'm pitching the site: I am. :)
